Preparing for the Sacraments at St. Alphonsus

We are happy to celebrate with you these grace filled encounters with the Lord in the sacraments.

Each year, hundreds prepare to celebrate the sacraments here. We welcome more than 180 babies in baptism, about 50-60 adults celebrate baptism, communion and/or confirmation, and children in our parish are prepared for confession, communion and confirmation. In addition to that, we prepare about 150 couples for marriage, about half to be married here and the others in parishes elsewhere.

Each of our sacrament preparation programs has these goals:

  • To help deepen your spirituality and encounter with the Lord.

  • To help you celebrate these events with full hearts and consciousness of the meaning.

  • To experience a beautiful celebration.

Becoming Catholic

We welcome about 30 to 40 people annually into the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. There are two preparation programs, depending on the person's religious background.

Some begin this process as inquirers, trying to determine if they will indeed decide to be Catholic. Others have already decided. Our goal is to help everyone come to a clear decision, with the hope that they will discover their call to be a disciple of Christ in the Church.

The first step is to meet with Catherine Crino, on the parish staff, to find out more about you, and to determine how we can best help.

Being Confirmed as an Adult

If you are Catholic, but have not yet made your First Communion, the RCIA, described above, is the best route for you.

If you have made your First Communion, we have preparation sessions that begin in March. The parish celebrates confirmation for both grade school and adult candidates in May. Look for the registration information for Catholicism 101, posted in January.

If you have other questions, please contact Catherine Crino.

Baptism of Infants and Children

Baptisms for infants and children up to the age of five are celebrated on most Sundays at 1:30 PM. (Some celebrations are scheduled at 2:30 PM as well.) There is a monthly preparation session for parents of infants.

For scheduling information, contact Linda Herrera in the parish office at 773-525-0709, ext.100.

There are no baptisms scheduled during the season of Lent.

If the child is older than five years old, contact Catherine Crino for more information. Once a child has reached school age, the process is different than for an infant.

Weddings

Every year, about 150 couples prepare for marriage at St. Alphonsus. About half are married here, and the others prepare here and celebrate their marriages in other parishes. Click here to see complete information.

Baptism, Confirmation, Penance and First Communion for Children

We have complete preparation programs for children of school age, beginning in kindergarten. These programs include students in our school, Alphonsus Academy and Center for the Arts, as well as our Tuesday Religious Education program. Click here to see complete information.
